CHESTAR SOFA
David Fox Designer of the Chestar explained the theories behind the collection “I have always been a lover of Classic items, designs that have stood the test of time!. Every morning I take a cup of tea sat in a chesterfield armchair, and contemplate the day! There has been a revival of the chesterfield in both hotel, and corporate spaces! Papell is a brand that functions well in what I call the classic / romantic market.
The brief for Chestar was to create something that had historical reference but brought an new more modern aesthetic, that supported Papell`s brand values. My experience of chesterfields was the straighter backed ones aren’t always comfortable, scrolled / curvy ones are, but in my opinion don’t have the aesthetic strong presence. In the initial sketch stages I experimented with flat oval shapes, which looked strong, by adding softer back cushions to compliment the upholstery, and by bulging the seat bases, a softer yet unique look began to emerge. Considered use of pipe details framed the shapes, then slightly elevated contrasting wood rail, gave a nice, and eye-catching shadow gap detail between the floor and the product. Both myself an Papell feel like the more modern vision that’s been created can be used in a multitude of spaces, home hotel and corporate, it continues to bring innovation to the portfolio, whilst being empathetic to the companies history.
